Welcome to Bite-Sized Science, a student-run blog dedicated to breaking down scientific topics into simple and engaging posts for the everyday public. We know that science can be a tough topic to tackle, but it’s important for people to have a foundational knowledge of the world around them and all the new advances being made. Our aim is to help facilitate knowledge translation- meaning we want to synthesize information and find an accessible way to teach what we learn. To sum this up nicely, here is our official mission statement:
At it’s very heart, Bite-Sized Science seeks to bridge the gap between scientific topics and the general public. Our goal is make science more digestible for everyone, while providing students with the opportunity to develop their scientific literacy and writing skills.
Each month will consist of one scientific theme or topic that will be explored in a mini series of blog posts. Though Bite-Sized Science is mainly focused on science, we also hope to include tidbits of history or social issues to help present a holistic view of the issue. Think of it as the seasoning or garnish that completes the meal! This month, our blog topic is sunscreen.
Lastly, as noted in our mission statement, we hope that you (our readers!) can join us in the future on our quest to make science accessible, and to have fun writing. Bite-Sized Science currently consists of three undergraduate students, but it’s our dream to have a big team that’s enthusiastic about science. For more information, follow us on our Instagram page @bitesizedsci. This Instagram account will also contain fun summaries of our blog posts, sneak peeks of what's to come and important announcements.
Learning new topics can feel like biting off more than you can chew, but hopefully, Bite-Sized Science can make scientific learning a little less daunting, and a lot more fun!
With love,
The Bite-Sized Science team
